Gold Vermeil

February 10, 2020

Gold Vermeil is a material which is a combination of a layer of thick gold over solid sterling silver. Gold vermeil is considered a higher quality form of gold plating as the gold is much thicker compared to other types of gold plating. The thickness is what sets vermeil gold jewellery apart from other gold plated pieces, it must be at least 2.5 microns, which is considerably more than than others gold plated items. Most pieces range from 14 to 24 karats, depending on the thickness.

The gold vermeil technique was developed originally in the 18th century, in France. The method of gold plating jewellery is called electrolysis, which is the process of covering the surface in gold. In modern day, gold vermeil is used in many things, for e.g. contemporary jewellery, crown jewels and even the Olympic gold medals.

The gold layer of the jewellery will eventually wear off over time. Preserving the original colour it needs to be dried immediately when wet. Do try to avoid it being in contact with cleaning products, perfume and other chemicals. To maintain its shine, please use a soft polishing cloth.

It is a great option for people who are allergic to metals due the thickness of the gold combined with the base of sterling silver. Gold vermeil is the perfect alternative to pure gold. It is a high-quality material but without the pure gold price tag.
